NJT: Pedestrian Killed By Train Laid Down on Tracks

A New Jersey Transit spokeswoman confirmed the death of a pedestrian in Red Bank.

An unidentified pedestrian killed by a New Jersey Transit train Saturday night in Red Bank purposefully laid on the tracks moments before being struck, according to an engineer's report of the incident.

At approximately 9:18 p.m., a man trespassing on the railway was seen by a New Jersey Transit engineer walking onto the tracks near Maple Avenue and then laying down without moving. The engineer applied the train's emergency brakes and sounded the train's horn, according to Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder, but the man did not move from the tracks.

Further information about the man's identity, including his age and name, was not immediately available pending an ongoing police investigation, Snyder said.

No injuries were reported to crew members or passengers and delays were minor, Synder said.

The last time a pedestrian was struck by a train in Red Bank was in February. Police said a man was reported to have jumped in front of a train as it approached the station. He was critically injured in the accident.

Further details will be released as they become available.
