Tragedy struck over the holiday weekend as two teenagers, including a Monmouth University student, were killed in a motor vehicle crash in East Brunswick Saturday evening.

Jeffrey Szatkowski, 17, of Spotswood, and Nicole Surace, 18, of Milltown, died following a single vehicle accident on Dutch Road. Surace was a freshman at Monmouth University.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Nov. 30, a 2004 Ford Mustang driven by Szatkowski was headed south on Dutch Road near Fresh Ponds Road, when his vehicle ran off the roadway and crashed into a telephone pole, according to police. After striking the pole, the Mustang then turned over in a wooded area and collided with a tree before landing on its roof.

Szatkowski and Surace were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where both were later pronounced dead, according to police.

Units from the Milltown Rescue Squad, East Brunswick Rescue Squad, Brookview Fire Department and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Paramedics responded to the scene.

The accident is currently under investigation. Anyone with any information regarding the crash is asked to contact Ptl. James Angermeier or Ptl. Glenn Tabasko of the East Brunswick Police Department's Special Operations Section at 732-390-6969.
