Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Participating in 'Click It or Ticket'

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office will take part in the nationwide “Click It of Ticket” seat belt enforcement program through Sunday, June 5. The county received a grant by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to participate in the campaign.

“The main focus of these patrols, which will be conducted primarily in the Neptune City area, will be to stop and issue summonses to motorists, front and rear passengers, who are not complying with the state’s seat belt laws,” Sheriff Shaun Golden said.

According to Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, motor vehicle occupants who use their seat belts increase their chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent.  Poedubicky noted that although the law requires back seat passengers to use seat belts, adult back seat use stands only at 27 percent as compared to 93.73 percent for front seat belt usage.

During the Click it or Ticket program in 2010, officers issued 213 summonses for seat belt violations, four for suspended licenses, nine for child restraint violations, and 38 additional summonses for other moving and non-moving violations. As a result of those motor vehicle stops, officers also made four drug arrests and apprehended a fugitive. 

“The success of our participation in the Click It or Ticket Mobilization in 2010, and our invitation to again participate in the 2011 initiative, illustrates our agency-wide commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Monmouth County residents,” Golden said.
