Long Branch Woman Indicted on Stolen Credit Card Charges

A 23-year old woman has been in the county jail since April, and faces multiple charges of stealing credit cards and using them in local stores.


Elizabeth R. Burgess, 23, of Howland Place in Long Branch has been indicted on 11 counts related to obtaining stolen credit cards and using them to shop at stores in Eatontown and Neptune. 

A grand jury sitting in Freehold voted to formal charges against Burgess on June 26. 

Burgess is accused of entering cars to take credit cards. She is accused of purchasing more than $500 worth of goods at Quick Chek, Walgreens and WaWa in Eatontown and Neptune on Feb. 26 with debit/credit cards she allegedly knew had been stolen. Court documents say she had possession of a two Visa debit/credit card, and two Barclay's Master Card credit cards issued in the name of "C.R." 

She is also facing charges for buying more than $500 in merchandise on Jan. 30 at Finish Line, Champs, Quick Chek and JC Penney in Eatontown using a stolen Discover card issued in the name of "M.A." 

In court, Burgess is facing seven counts of unlawful use of credit card, and two counts of theft by deception. These are third degree crimes in which a defendant could face 3-5 years if convicted. 

She is also facing two counts of credit card theft, considered a fourth degree crime, whch carries a potential penalty of up to 18 months in jail if convicted. 

Burgess has been held in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in lieu of $25,000 bail since April 14 on more than three dozen charges related to credit card theft out of Long Branch, Eatontown and West Long Branch.
