UPDATE: Hole Collapses On Boy Digging in Sand in Long Branch, Responding Fire Truck Strikes Pedestrians

Boy remains in pediatric intensive care unit at Monmouth Medical Center

A large hole collapsed on a young boy who was digging in the sand in Long Branch on Tuesday afternoon, and a fire truck responding to the scene hit a pedestrian who was holding his toddler.

All three victims have been taken to area hospitals for their injuries, according to Long Branch Police Capt. Jason Roebuck.

Roebuck said the 12-year-old boy was digging in the sand and that CPR was performed on him by lifeguards as soon as he was pulled out of the hole. He said the boy was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center for treatment and that police are still investigating the incident.

The boy is still in the the pediatric intensive care unit at the hospital as of 9:30 p.m., according to Roebuck.

The man holding his toddler was struck near the corner of Madison Avenue and Ocean Boulevard just as a fire truck was turning the corner to respond to the scene of the incident on the beach.

Roebuck said the man dropped the toddler just as the fire truck hit him. He said both the toddler's and the man's injuries appear to be non life-threatening, and that they were taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. No update on their condition was immediately available.

Both incidents occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m.

This is a breaking news story and it will be updated as soon as more information becomes available.

Stop with this first responders nonsense. most of them are wanna bes like george zimmerman. they zip around in their little pickup trucks with those stupid lights because they couldn’t be real po po. I always try to slow down and block those jack asses when I see them zipping around. And before you guys try to say it - no I don’t need them to help me - I can put out my own fires and bring myself to the hospital.

The secondary issue is that there was most likely no emergency plan for beach access across the bicycle/pedestrian path. Hence a man was struck by an emergency vehicle, according to the Patch.
GET REAL July 18, 2012 at 03:53 pm
Im not sure if any of you have driven emergency vehicles especially on the promenade, however, emergency vehicle operators are now used to cars pulling out in front of emergency vehicles on the roadway, cars stopping in the middle of the lane, middle of the roadway, pulling left, not right... Now you have pedestrians do the same thing, I have driven an emergency vehicle on the promenade, you would be surprised how many people step into my path way or step into the way, now add the fact that your operating a tower ladder, watching the rear of the truck to make your turn, while watching the front, while watching for pedestrians, while listening to the radio for instructions, the fact that you need the tower ladder close to the scene as it has the confined space rescue equipment on it, but it's not an easy task.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family, Once again, If it wasn't for the life guards digging him out and initiating CPR, it would be a much worse scenario.

@ michael when you have a stroke at 4am and cant take yourself to the hospital or when your house catches fire while your sleeping and you dont notice untill your blocked in your room dont call 911 keep blocking emergency vehicles. your such a stupid and immature baby if thats what you really do..
Knowthefacts July 18, 2012 at 04:01 pm
Michael vale, I hope one day it's your family that needed those jack asses. You would be the first loser whining and and crying law suit. I hope you also get witnessed one day intentionally blocking someone going to a call the cops will have a field day with you, loser.
Knowthefacts July 18, 2012 at 04:02 pm
It's generally jerks like you that the fireman have to pull their sorry asses out of a fire because they "didn't need them" till it was way beyond there alleged control.
Heather July 18, 2012 at 04:07 pm
Michael that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I'm glad you can put out your own fires but many other people can't. And those "wanna-be po pos" are usually VOLUNTEERS who are zipping around trying to get to a fire so they can run into a burning building and save people and or property of people that they don't know. You slowing down and blocking those "jackasses" could potentially cost someone their possessions or even worse their life. Hopefully one of your family members never needs a volunteer to quickly get to them, and if they do I hope a jackass like you isn't deliberately trying to slow down and block them from reaching your loved one.

When I was a guard, we enforced knee deep for the shortest person in the group. These kids, especially the Benny's and their parents, just don't know.
Holly July 18, 2012 at 05:56 pm
Any update on the man and toddler ?
Big Whitey July 18, 2012 at 05:57 pm
The road we are talking about may be an emergency access lane, but it has a large red swath painted down the middle with stencils of bicycles. To me, and I am sure out of town visitors, that makes it a bike path. The Hovanian vehicle does not have license plates, and every day it drives the wrong way up Ocean Terrace. The special officers in the yellow shirts drive ATV's up and down it all day long. Municipal trucks drive up and down all day long. The beach has even more traffic, mostly young kids driving back and forth all day long. Not trained fire and policeman, but kids, many without a license. The fact that it was a firetruck is fortunate, as we know he had training and was competent. If, however, it was a kid in an ATV that ran into that family, the City would be in trouble. The Mayor and Department heads better realize this soon, before another accident happens. We cant prevent drownings and beach accidents, but we can prevent promenade accidents with some common sense and planning. Emergency vehicles only, in an emergency situation only, would be a good start, including the beach. If not, open the road back up so people can expect traffic.

Wow, where do I begin? The ignorance is so high here that I do not even know where to start. Let’s try here, where do you get the rite to impede the progress of first responders and think that your priorities are higher than the people they are responding to? It’s not just firefighters who have these lights its EMTs as well, what if the person is responding to a cardiac arrest where seconds count? Even these "jackass" firemen have only minutes to respond as a small trash can fire can turn into a fully involved room in minutes.
And good for you that you don’t need someone to help you, I am glad that you feel that you have the adequate training to put out a fire in your house, or perform the necessary actions that need to be taken seconds after you have a heart attack, but others don’t, and to put yourself before them is selfish. Lastly, they are not want to be po po. Not only does that offend firefighters everywhere, but also police officers who put their lives on the line every day for people like you and me. I am a firefighter and I have never wanted to be a police officer, so I do not appreciate any of your comment. While I agree that it is a tragedy that other people were hurt in response to the first incident, you do have to take into account what Get Real had to say with all that the first responders have to deal with. I hope next time you think before you comment on stores like this. My prayers are with all the injured and hurt in this incident.

There are no real firefighters in monmouth county just the wanna bees. I also hope the po po see them since they are not allowed to speed or run red lights or drive like the jack asses they do. They have no special rights to drive any differently. They are just dudes that got bullied and wanted to be a po po but were already fat. check them out I dare you and i am sure you cry babies are all obese wanna bees also.

I am just so sickened of all this bickering back and forth, meanwhile that poor 12 year old boy buried in the sand passed away at Monmouth Medical Center this afternoon. My sincere condolences go out to his family. I think we should all pray for his family as they grieve through this tough time!
Shannon K. Winning July 18, 2012 at 08:24 pm
Indeed.

Michael, there are many people that are still alive today because of the Wannabe Fire Fighters..What a rotten thing to say..Do you know that there are many Professional Paid Firemen in Nj that are also Vol Firemen? Its obvious that you never volunteered in any capacity your whole Life..I wonder if you would ever call the Fire Dept or EMS if your Parents or any family member ever needed it? You should tell your family right now that you, as a human being cant be counted on..I do expect some type of unintelligent anser from you..
Linda July 18, 2012 at 08:47 pm
My prayers go out to the boys family. That said everyone should stop arguing and learn from this one important thing. If you see a child digging under the sand or like I was told as child under the snow, stop them immediately because sand and snow will cave in. I'm sure people at the beach witnessed the child digging and said or did nothing until it was to late.

Sadly, the boy passed away this afternoon, according to the link news. My heart goes out to this family !!! Also, I would like to share that almost always do I see in an emergency vehicles with lights & sirens on and people do not pull over, this is very disturbing to me all the time. I cannot imagine what people are thinking when these people are giving there time & risking there life to save someone elses. Does anyone ever think it could be there family member. I have never experience anyone going to and 911 calls for the hell of it. I myself have put myself in harms way to save lives, many times in this town. I love this town, I love what these people do, and trust me, they do it with there hearts..Accident happen, I am sure they did not want to run thos guy down. I am sorry, so sorry to hear he was injured. Please stop with all the judgement calls against people who would stop in a heart beat to save a life. One day it may be yours! I praise them all !!!!!!

This Michael Vale J.O. Isn't even worth the argument. Another whining ungrateful ass thats all. Thoughts and prayers with the boys family.

So terribly sorry for the family...such a senseless tragedy.
Holmdel Dem July 18, 2012 at 10:36 pm
Given that this poor boy passed away, the Patch should close out this column from further posts out of respect for the family. There is no need to bicker on these trivial matters at this time.
Lisa July 19, 2012 at 12:43 pm
Michael.....It is a shame this is the way you feel. Police, Firemen, any Emergency Responder are more often putting your lives and safety before that of their own lives and that of thier families. Unless you can personally attest to what crosses their mind when they have to respond to an emergent call, I suggest you keep your ignorant comments to yourself. And I will certainly make it known to my husband that if you are ever in dire need of help, maybe he should slow down while getting to you!!!!!!
Lisa July 19, 2012 at 12:49 pm
You are truly ignorant....as a family member of a "po po" , your statements could not be more untrue. Me and my children went days without my husband during that blizzard so that he could dig out all of "you" people that thought you could drive in the snow despite the warnings....At that he had to walk to work in the 3 ft of snow.....sounds like a guy who just became a cop cause he "got bullied" right??!!! I think you might be the fat, dude that cries and got bullied and are hiding behind a computer in order to speak your ignorant comments.......Just sayin.....
NJarhead July 19, 2012 at 01:05 pm
Michael Vale is an apparent waste of skin. I wouldn't justify another of his comments with a reply.
tattooedFire. July 19, 2012 at 03:03 pm
R.I.P. little guy. And the father and child injured during the response of the L.B.F.D. is a tragic thing. As a First Responder Paid or Volunteer takes alot. Most cant cope or deal with putting ones life on the line for others. So the ones that tried and couldnt do it or never could are the
wendy whiners! So suck it up babys.
Thenews July 20, 2012 at 08:23 am
Believe it or not the City of Long Branch has an ordinance that deals with digging holes. Maybe it something the lifeguards/special officers should start to enforce. The law is on the book so why not use. Long Branch has a slew of ordinances for their beaches.
http://www.visitlongbranch.com/docs/citycodebook.pdf City Ordinance 116-5 O. No hole shall be dug in the public bathing beach in such a manner as to leave a depression more than 12 inches deep in the surface of the land.
Michael O'Brien July 20, 2012 at 10:42 am
Why aren't the parents brought to task on this tragic loss? My parents raised four of us, and we spent summers down the shore as well?
Either that or employ an extra Nanny, preferably someone who cam speak Englsh!

I will drive through the area tomorrow to see if I spot anything! Try googling volunteer searchRead More groups for missing dogs. There are a few in the NJ area. Also ask the local SPCA and Humane Society to see if they can lend you humane traps. Try patrolling the area with food of a strong odor...raw meat, steak, etc. Search in tiny groups and split up to avoid scaring him away, and always bring food and a leash in case you have to lure him over and then leash him. Try also sitting in the area last spotted quietly to see if he approaches you. Bring food so he smells it. Just a few things I have learned while doing some dog searches. Keep sharing and put up posters locally...it helps!
