UPDATE: Firefighters Extinguish Three-Alarm Blaze in Long Branch

Fire occurred at Mid Atlantic Food Distributors on West Avenue

Firefighters extinguished a three-alarm fire at Mid Atlantic Food Distributors on West Avenue in Long Branch on Thursday night.

The fire was reported around 9:30 p.m. and firefighters were able to extinguish it after 11 p.m. The blaze appears to have started near the rear of the building.

Smoke could be seen billowing through the air from as far as the boardwalk in Long Branch, but it started to dissipate as crews began to knock the fire down near the main building.

The fire spread to a tree in the rear of the property and firefighters began sending crews to Cleveland Avenue which runs perpendicular to West Avenue in order to extinuish it.

West Avenue, Cleveland Avenue and Willow Avenue were still closed to traffic at 11 p.m.

The cause and exact point of origin of the fire are unknown at this time. Long Branch Police and fire officials were still on the scene on Friday morning.

The Long Branch Fire Marshal could not be reached for comment on Friday.
