UPDATE: Investigator Injured During Inspection of Monday Morning Fire

Fire was contained to third floor of North Bath Avenue in Long Branch

An investigator from the Long Branch Fire Marshal's Office was injured while inspecting a fire that burned through the third floor of a North Bath Avenue home on Monday morning.

Long Branch Fire Marshal Kevin J. Hayes, Sr., said the investigator "suffered an episode," after entering the home. Hayes said the fire did not have anything to do with his episode.

The investigator, who Hayes declined to identify, was taken by ambulance to Monmouth Medical Center.

"He is doing OK, but will spend the night in the hospital," Hayes said Monday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire was reported around 6:20 a.m., and all occupants of the home were out approximately 10 minutes later, and could be seen on the street near the home. Hayes said none of the occupants were injured.

The bulk of the fire appeared to be extinguished by 6:40 a.m., but black smoke was still coming from the front and side windows of the third floor. Hayes said the fire was contained to an attic storage area of the multi-family home.

Hayes said the fire is still being investigated but that it was "possibly caused by an electrical malfunction."

The Long Branch Police closed off North Bath Avenue from Second Avenue to Ocean Boulevard to extinguish the blaze, but the street was reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
