The Holmdel 22-year-old who allegedly caused a head-on collision which sent himself and three others, including two Long Branch residents, to the hospital has been charged with driving while intoxicated, according to Holmdel police.

Anthony Carbone, 22, of Bethany Road in Holmdel was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and assault by auto. Holmdel Police said Carbone was processed and released pending a court date.

Carbone was driving his Ford on Tuesday morning, southbound on Route 34 when he allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic, striking a Volkswagen being driven by Hidajet Hamzic, 55, of Long Branch and sending Hamzic's car into the woods.

Carbone then allegedly continued the wrong way on the northbound side of Route 34, causing a head-on collision with a Kia driven by Vicky Vandunk, 48, of Farmingdale.

After being extricated from her vehicle by Holmdel Fire Companies #1 and #2, Vandunk was airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical by the N.J. State Police helicopter for internal and leg injuries, according to police.

Hamzic and his passenger Sabaheta Hamzic, 54, of Long Branch were transported to Bayshore Community Hospital by the Holmdel First Aid Squad for back and neck injuries.

Carbone suffered a leg injury and was transported to Riverview Medical Center by the Colts Neck First Aid squad.
