Moving? Here's How to Network Before You Even Leave.

This past week I learned that two of my friends are moving to different states.  One asked me for a bit of networking advice and the other (being a natural networker) has already made some connections and even has some consulting work lined up in her new town.  How do they do it? They do it by networking personally and through LinkedIn.  Here’s how you can do it too.

1.      Use your LinkedIn contacts for advice and to feel out an area.  Of course you have to have LinkedIn contacts to do that so make sure that you join groups in your area of expertise along with some local networking circles. Once in the groups ask for advice.

2.      Are you in a professional organization?  Look for the LinkedIn group that supports it and ask the members for information about local housing, jobs, schools, professional organizations and the like.

3.      Search LinkedIn for the Chamber of Commerce in the new town and contact them. You could also Google this.

4.      Use the search feature on LinkedIn to look for jobs in the new area.

5.      Pull up a local newspaper and research any networking meetings or other opportunities.

6.      Ask your friends and family if they have any contacts in the new area and if they might be able to connect you to them in an email.

These are just a few things to get you started if you are considering moving to a new town or state.  Can you add to this list?
