It's Time to Plant Some Daffodil Bulbs!

Want to have some bright, cheery daffodils blooming in your yard next spring? Now's the time to get the bulbs into the ground!

With Sandy behind us and with the weather getting colder every day, it’s time to look ahead to next year and to plant some spring-flowering bulbs.  My favorites are daffodils because they’re easy to plant, they come in so many varieties and they always look so happy when most of the rest of the flower world is still dormant.

Every year we plant about 1,000 more daffodil bulbs and I received this year’s batch right before the hurricane hit us. I’ve kept them nice and cool in the garage, and now that most of the hurricane cleanup is done we can pop them into the ground. We like to plant the bulbs in clumps of 5 or 7, and when spring comes they are one of the first things to bloom after the crocuses. Having several different varieties stretches the bloom season over several months.

We’ve had good luck with the Rijnveld’s Early Sensation variety (the photo attached was taken on Feb 2, 2012), but you might want to start with the big, showy old favorite trumpet daffodils such as Dutch Master or King Alfred. Then you might want to add some of the white trumpets like Mount Hood, or some of the bi-color ones or even some of the pink ones.

If you don’t have many daffodils in your garden right now, plant some (or a lot)! They’re not very expensive, they come up year after year, and they multiply and naturalize with no effort on your part. Since they’re such early bloomers they grow in places that get pretty shady after the deciduous trees and bushes begin to leaf. When they bloom in February, March and April, you’ll be very glad you spent a few hours planting daffodil bulbs around Thanksgiving time.
