Eatontown Cleanup Postponed by Rain; Scouts Forge Ahead Despite Weather

Eatontown's annual cleanup was postponed but the scouts were determined to go ahead.

The Annual Pride in Eatontown Spring Cleanup has been postponed until the rain date of Sunday, April 29 due to the northeaster that blew into town over the weekend, but a group of Scouts went ahead with their assignment in spite of the wet, windy downpour.

Under the leadership of Eileen Ferrugia, scouts from Cub Pack 52, Boy Scout Troop 49, as well as Daisies and Jr. Girl Scouts, with their drenched parents, braved the rain and turned out to remove litter from 80 Acres Park.  They filled eleven trashbags with litter.

The rain was badly needed, but the timing couldn’t have been worse for the planned cleanup.  The Pride in Eatontown committee will try again next Sunday, April 29.

Volunteers from businesses on Industrial Way, local service organizations, Monmouth Regional High School, and individual residents will meet behind Borough Hall at 1 p.m., to be assigned to a littered area.  After the cleanup, refreshments will be provided at the Community Center, 72 Broad St.  The mayor and council will present certificates at a May Borough Council meeting to the scouts and other groups who provide five or more participants.

This year’s cleanup is dedicated to the memory of Mary Francese, long-time PIE volunteer and secretary, who died last week at the age of 88. Don Bretzger, Pride spokesperson, said Mary embodied the dependability and sense of responsibility so vital to an all-volunteer organization.
