An Evening with Mae Kent

On Wednesday evening, April 11, 2012, from 7pm until 9pm, it is our pleasure to present W. Mae Kent for a presentation and book signing. The event will take place in Monmouth University's Wilson Hall.

Her book, "Titanic,The Untold Story", is the first Ms. Kent has published and the second she has written. The story is a fiction, but is based on the fact that there was a Negro aboard the Titanic. Says Kent, “This is a story that had to be told. Although my book is fiction, it illuminates the fact that there was, indeed,a Black man on board. This is a fact historians, filmmakers and writers have ignored for nearly 100 years. We have to remember the world was a very different place for people of color in 1912. For a Negro to be aboard the ill-fated vessel was an accomplishment in and of itself.”

The real-life individual her character is based on is Joseph Phillippe Lemercier Laroche, a Haitian businessman and engineer. He came from a powerful family. In fact, his uncle was the president of Haiti.
