Eating During the Storm

Food tips for hurricane Sandy.

As we are all preparing for a storm of epic proportions, it occurred to me that some suggestions on how to eat without electricity might be helpful. 

Here are some foods that are easy and shelf-stable:

  • Bread Crackers
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly Tuna, salmon or chicken in cans or packets
  • Canned beans
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned fruit, apple sauce
  • Fresh fruits (melon should be refrigerated or quickly consumed after cutting)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dried fruit
  • Cereal
  • Juice boxes

If you have a gas stove top – despite not having use of the electric starter, you can use a match to light your stove. Pasta, rice, soups and sauces can easily be heated up. Stews and chilies can also be easily prepared. Even popcorn can be made with oil in a covered pot for snacking.

Wonder about your refrigerator and freezer? According to the USDA, a full freezer will keep food cold for 48 hours if opened minimally. A refrigerator will keep food cold for up to 4 hours. You may put ice into your refrigerator to help keep the temperature cold. When it comes to milk, if you don’t have the small shelf-stable boxes, another option is using evaporated milk.  Instant coffee is the next best thing to a fresh brewed cup if you are desperate for the flavor.  Please feel free to share some your favorite electricity-free recipes and strategies with us!

I think these are all great suggestions. If you are planning a 72 hour emergency food plan these are all great. You may also want to consider freeze dried meals (available at decent sporting good stores). The meals range from scrambled eggs to beef stroganoff. These are not the MRE meals that the military eats they are very tasty and you can eat them hot without a stove or grill (self heating pouches). In a stressful situation one might consider about 1100 calories a day as a minimum. Please keep in mind that the critical factor in these situations is water; clean, purified water. I was taught to calculate a minimum of 3 gallons per day, per person.

The 3 gallons of water per person, per day rule also incorporates bathing, cooking, and washing (dishes, clothes, etc.)

Great tips everyone! I like the MRE-inspired meal idea (esp. since my friend who is an RD in the Navy told me he's driving case loads of them up from the VA Hospital in VA this weekend! I hope those who are in need have found food - hot and non-perishables. I know there are many resources in our community - we are all helping each other out. I know another storm is on its way and hope that we sustain minimal added damage at this time!

Friends of mine in Tennesse sent a few cases of MRE's and Poland Spring Water that weren't needed by my family so they were brought to the Little League complex opposite Brick Memorial and donated to the families in need. What a great operation the volunteers organized over there for the residents and friends of the township. Great job folks.

if you pickle eggs, (1cup aple cider viniger,1cup water, canned beets and juice on hard boiled eggs)they can sit out on a counter for some time.
