Water Main Break in Eatontown Shuts Down Lane on Route 35

Crews are expected to be at work until 6 p.m. Friday repairing damage from Thursday night's accident.

A water main break caused by a construction crew working on Route 35 in Eatontown near the Pine Tree Mobile Village on Thursday night has left one southbound lane closed on Friday and has affected local businesses, according to police.

The break, which occurred directly in front of the mobile park, is forcing traffic to be rerouted through the parking lot on Friday and police expect work to continue through 6 p.m. to repair damage.

Workers from Henkels and McCoy ruptured a 24-inch water main around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday causing a spray of water to shoot across the highway as far as the on the northbound side, according to Lt. Lawrence Tyler of the Eatontown Police.

Although no one was injured in the accident, Route 35 was shut down initially while a crew from New Jersey American Water worked until midnight to shut off the water. Route 35 northbound has been reopened to traffic but only one lane is open on the southbound side.

Hinkels and McCoy had been subcontracted to perform the water main work by NJAW, according to a release, and the crew had begun milling the roadway and clearing it of asphalt when they hit the water main.
