Rooftop Chase Atop Eastern Mountain Sports Leads to Arrest

The suspect was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal clothes, shoes and a hammock from the Route 35 outdoor retailer.

An Ocean man led officers on a rooftop chase while attempting to steal approximately $500 worth of merchandise from the Eastern Mountain Sports store in Eatontown.

Raul Velez, 19, of 1415 Rustic Dr., Ocean, was arrested on Aug. 26 after allegedly breaking into the Route 35 outdoor retailer through a hatch after the store was closed and attempting to steal clothing, shoes and a hammock.

Velez then led Eatontown Police officers Philip Emanuele, Matthew Fix and Anthony Guido on a chase across the store's roof, located at 133 Rt. 35, Eatontown.

The suspect was charged with burglary (third degree), theft of movable property (third degree) and resisting arrest (fourth degree).

Velez was held on $7,500 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 1.
