Long Branch's Bite Your Belgian Puts A New Spin on Waffles

Belgian waffle snack stop opens in Pier Village

By Christopher Sheldon

You may never look at waffles in the same way after visiting Bite Your Belgian, at 48 Centennial Drive in Long Branch's Pier Village.

Owner Ted Kutzin and his four daughters are churning out authentic Belgian waffles and are changing the misconception that the waffle is just a breakfast food.

"Our specialty is the liege sugar caramelized Belgian waffle and this is an authentic recipe just like they use in Belgium," Kutzin said. "The difference between this waffle and the ones Americans are used to is that Americans will think of it as a breakfast food, this is more of a dessert where it would be eaten instead of a pretzel or doughnut."

The waffles are served with toppings Spectaculous, a graham cracker spread from Belgium that is similar to the texture of peanut butter. Other toppings include Choclate Dream, a Belgian chocolate spread,  melted semi-sweet chocolate, raspberry drizzle, caramel drizzle, maple syrup and whipped cream.

Kutzin said he also makes miniature waffle bites and uses them them to create a waffle kebobs with pieces of fruit. He also makes ice cream waffle sandwhiches.

He said this type of waffle has been around since the 1800's in Belgium, but in the United States it is not that popular at this point.

"It's neat to see people come in and enjoy them," Kutzin said. "It's something different for them because most people have never even tried one of these."

Kutzin said he also makes fruit ice, which is berries that are frozen and then used in drinks instead of ice cubes.

He said he chose Pier Village because of its popularity and the foot traffic in the area.

"We've been placing these in malls, but we thought this was a good spot for a local store and we've been using it to try out some new things," he said.

Kutzin and his daughter/manager Taylor, live in Pier Village, and his other three daughters also work at the store.

Kutzin said his Pier Village store opened on June 14 but that he has two other locations in upstate New York and has another opening in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Bite Your Belgian is open from Sunday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.
