Long Branch Zoning Board To Hear Synagogue Application Tonight

Synagogue would replace old movie theater on Ocean Avenue

A group will come before The Long Branch Zoning Board Monday night with an application that would replace the old movie theater on Ocean Avenue with a synagogue and Jewish community center.

The theater, which is located near Lou's Uniforms and Ocean Cafe, was once one of the only of its kind in the area, and closed over 20 years ago.

The entire blacktop area behind the theater and the neighboring buildings are considered part of the property and are part of the site plan. The blacktop area is currently used as a free parking area by residents who visit West End.

Patch wrote a story asking viewers the site and what they thought about the application last month, and the response from the community was overwhelming.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight in Long Branch City Hall.

The last thing this area needs is --another non-rateable--esp a synagouge w/ another already on Cedar Ave. The Kruse's (on Wertheim Place).

I love to see new houses of worship open and see a community of faith come together. But in my selfish heart, I was hoping for an art cinema like Clearview in Red Bank. I spent many happy teenage nights there when it was still a movie house.

People bring commerce to the surrounding area so much that it can negate that it would be non-rateable, that the movie house has been closed for almost 20 years negates the" pie in the sky" return of a movie house. We can not have enough houses of worship for all, hopefully we will need many more churches & synoguoges it means that the population in Long Branch is growing, not fading. Too many towns are loosing their congregants leaving many houses of worship unused. a buliding that has been laying dormant for so many years is for sure infested with all types of vermin. There are Chabad houses all over the world from China, to Honk Kong to Africa, & they not only cater to their own faith, but give help & comfort to all who walk thru their doors.
