Eatontown Historical Museum Honors Veterans And Those Currently Serving In The United States Military

Sunday was a special day at the Eatontown Museum as the Eatontown Historical Society honored the service of veterans and those who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.   The front lawn of the museum was decorated with 100 American flags each of which beared the name of a former or current service member which was inscribed on the attached ribbon by a community member.  Inside the museum where many displays including a uniform and gear from the World War I era, scrapbooks which were kept by a local resident whose son was serving in World War II, mementos from life at home during WW II,  including ration books, v-mail, war bonds, victory gardens, etc.

Ken Gerbisz and members of the Holmgren-Gerbisz American Legion Post were on hand with several displays including information on the Captain James Gurbisz Foundation which raises money to assist at risk children in the community by supporting a variety of activities.   Captain Gerbisz, the son of Ken and Helen Gurbisz of Eatontown, died while serving his country in 2005 while taking part in Operation Iraqi Freedom.   In addition, there was a photo presentation of a soon to be fully restored Vietnam Era Huey helicopter.  After the restoration is complete, the Huey will be permanently installed next Spring at the Vietnam Era Museum & Educational Center in Holmdel, NJ.

Also on display, was information on Frank Holmgren of Eatontown who was one of only ten survivors of the sinking of the USS Juneau in November of 1942, which claimed the lives of 687 men including the five Sullivan Brothers.  Local area Boys Scouts were on hand to present the colors.  The day concluded with  Eatontown Boys Scout Noah Krueger playing Taps as the colors were retired.
