2013 Sandy Hook Lighthouse Run for the Blind Held Saturday In Eatontown

The 8th Annual Sandy Hook Lighthouse 5k Run/Walk for the Blind was held on Saturday in Eatontown.

The 8th Annual Sandy Hook Lighthouse Run/Walk for the Blind was held on Saturday in Eatontown.  In previous years, the race was held on Sandy Hook however because of damage from Hurricane Sandy, the Eatontown Lions Club which sponsors the race, was forced to seek a new location for the event.   Saturdays race would start and finish at Joe’s Sports  Bar (McCloone’s) which is located at Sun Eagles Golf Course in Eatontown.  The event benefits the New Jersey Blind  Citizens Association and Camp Happiness which is based in Leonardo, New Jersey and has been serving New Jersey’s blind citizens for over 100 years.

The 5k course winded through the South Street/Lewis Street section of the Borough with runners twice running into and around parts of Wolcott Park.
The overall race winner as well as the first woman finisher was Jennifer
Gunn of Aberdeen.   The 2nd place finisher as well as the first male finisher was Michael Procopio of Ocean, NJ.  Special guests included  several very friendly seeing eye dog puppies in training and their handlers which were from various clubs in New Jersey.  The dogs and their handlers joined the runners in walking the course.

Eatontown Lion Club member Joe Freeman noted that he wished to thank the volunteers from the Jersey Shore  Running Club for running the logistics of the event.   Other organizations that helped to make the day a success included Joe’s Sports Bar & Grill (McLoone’s) which provided facilities  support, the staff and management of Sun Eagles Golf Course for providing parking  and adequate space for the start and finish, the Eatontown Police Department which provided course safety and traffic control as well as several members of  the Eatontown Boys Scouts who provided runners with water at two locations on the course.  Lion Toby Stark said he wished to thank all of the runners who turned out to support the event.
