Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer season in Long Branch and for the last 13 years, there has been on event that helps usher in the beautiful weather and showcase the area unlike any other.

The Long Branch Arts Council along with the Long Branch Historical Association are  hosting the 13th Annual Art in the Park event at West End Park in Long Branch on Sunday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature dozens of artists who will be displaying artwork of various shapes, sizes and colors.

Artist and event coordinator Mare Akana said Art in the Park is about “Being able to meet the artists and talk to them about their work.”

“This is a favorite event for them,” Akana said of the participants. “As an artist, this would be the one show I wouldn't miss if I was able to participate.”

The Paul Marino Ban will perform live music in the gazebo and there will be a Visitors Gallery where children can create their own artwork to display in the park.

Participating artists will be selling a variety of items and they will receive awards that will be given out in each of eight categories, along with a People’s Choice award selected by event attendees.

Last year's Art in the Park featured more than 60 artists and event planners are hoping for a similar turnout on Sunday.

The section of Brighton Avenue between Second Avenue and Ocean Boulevard will be closed to traffic during the course of the event.
