Theatre Watch: Pawn Stars and Kris Kristofferson Highlight Busy Week

Check out what's happening this week at Count Basie Theatre.

There is something for everyone this week at Count Basie: free movies, great music, children’s stories and even a look inside the pawn shop business.

If you’re in the mood for music, choose to rock out to Alejandro Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys on Wednesday, May 4 or listen to the legendary Kris Kristofferson on Thursday, May 5. 

If you need some entertainment, but just don’t have the extra cash, stop by on Tuesday, May 3 to watch the classic movie A Face in the Crowdfor free.

If you’ve run out of ideas on how to keep your kids busy for the week, head to Count Basie on the morning of Thursday, May 5 for a musical revue of children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and other story books. 

This week also brings the Count Basie Annual Gala on Friday, May 6. In its ninth year, this year’s theme is the “Speakeasy Ball.” The night will have all those who attend taking a trip back in time to an era of prohibition, flappers, and legendary gangsters.

If you’ve been engaging in some serious spring cleaning these last few weeks and have unearthed some items that have you wondering if they are trash or treasure, grab a ticket to the Sunday, May 8 History Channel presentation ofPawn Stars Gold and Silver Road Show and find out.

If you feel like being part of something truly legendary, grab tickets to Thursday’s performance when the renowned artist Kris Kristofferson will take the stage. 

Kristofferson is an actor, musician and songwriter who is known for such famous songs as” Me and Bobby McGee”and “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.” He has also starred in numerous movies, including A Star is Born with Barbara Streisand and Payback with Mel Gibson.

Kristofferson has released eighteen solo albums throughout his career. In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and in 2006 he received the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. 

He has also received three Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for his work in A Star is Born.  He is truly a legend, and his performance is not to be missed.

If you are feeling in the mood for something a little more “underground,” stop by on Wednesday to catch and extraordinary performance by Alejandro Escovedo.

Escovedo is a singer/ songwriter from Austin, Texas who began his career in the 1980’s. His style is described as “roots rocks/alternative country,” and he enjoys a cult like following by lovers of underground music.  

He started his career playing in a variety of different bands, and in 1992 decided to go solo. He released his first solo album Gravity, and hasn’t stopped since. His most recent album, Street Songs of Love, was released in 2010. Escovedo describes the album as “an album about love, the pursuit of a feeling that is forever elusive, mysterious, and addictive.”

If you are a History Channel addict, then Sunday’s Pawn Stars Gold and Silver Road Show is the place to be. The TV show stars Rick and Corey Harrison and Austin “Chumlee” Russell. Each episode follows the ins and outs of a family owned pawn shop business in Las Vegas.

The live show will let the audience in on the secrets of the business, the stories behind the “treasures,” and of course, what they are worth. Sunday’s show will feature an interactive with the audience as the crew inspects collectibles submitted by ticketholders.
