A Standing Ovation for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The Shore Players production of Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical ended with enthusiastic cheers

The Shore Players, Shore Regional school districts theater department, had their closing performance of “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Shore Regional High School on Sunday, March 13.

The musical was “colorful” in more ways than one! The music of Andrew Lloyd Weber enlivened the crowd as they were traveled back in time to the biblical era.

Weber utilizes various styles of music throughout the show including: calypso, rock, disco, charleston, french ballads, and a western hoedown.

Director Todd Aikens took advantage of the shifting musical styles and had the cast change costumes for the different numbers, creating a more enchanting world.

Aikens, a Shore Regional alum, put a distinctive spin on the traditional story by having the narrator tell the tale of Joseph to her little sister. Therefore, the audience gets to see the story through the eyes of a little girl, which allows the spectators to understand and get caught up in the fanciful world before them.

With very little dialogue, almost the entire musical was sung-through. The Narrator, played by Chelsea Amoroso, carries the audience from scene to scene and doesn’t miss a step.

Amoroso, a senior at Shore Regional, showcases exceptional talent as a performer: she has a fresh stage presence, a tremendous voice, and an incredible dancing ability. Amoroso commands almost every scene and even when the ensemble is dancing and singing on stage, it is hard not to look at her.

The powerful voice of David Smolokoff as Joseph was another jaw-dropper. Smolokoff’s performance was compelling and thoughtful. The most moving scene being when Joseph is placed in jail by the Potiphar and he sings the ballad, “Close Every Door”. Alone on stage, Smolokoff captivates the audience with his deep, melodious voice.

Nevertheless, it was the performance of the Pharaoh which got the crowd riled up the most! Chloe Chalakani, a junior at Shore Regional, wowed the audience with her extraordinary singing voice. In the “Song of the King”, Chloe belts out high notes and holds them for a very long time. Dressed in an Elvis-inspired outfit, Chloe dances and acts like the king of rock and roll--keeping the audience in hysterics.

The entire ensemble cast was tremendous in all aspects of performance, and the technical and production crew did a great job designing and executing the show. Every scene was well choreographed and sung; the costumes were unexpected and fun, and the live music from the orchestra added another dimension to the live musical show.

The crowd went wild during the closing performance and gave the cast and crew a standing ovation for all of their hard work and a job well done!
