Monmouth University Students Raise Money For Local Charities

Students raise more than $3,000

Monmouth University communication students have raised more than $3,000 for local charities over the course of the first semester of the school year.

Professor Sherry Sukienik’s Small Group Communication class took the holiday initiative by creating three fundraisers. Split into three groups, the class worked on setting fundraising goals and structuring plans on how to reach them.

The first group adopted a family from the Ronald McDonald House of Long Branch. The students purchased gifts for the family after gathering nearly $500 through a silent auction and bake sale.

The second group raised money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, since one of the members suffers from Crohn’s Disease. The group raised more than  $3,000 between its charity walk held on the Kessler Field Track at the university on Nov. 17 and its donation web page, according to group member Lucy Russo.

The third group raised nearly $350 and sent presents to soldiers overseas.

In addition, communication student Ashley Anton participated in a Holidays for the Homeward Bound 2012 campaign in which she provided the pets at the Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA) with the holiday homelike experience.

Anton placed drop boxes on campus and distributed flyers in the local community to solicit donations and Monmouth University’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) set up an “Animal Giving Tree” in the Student Center to benefit the MCSPCA.

PRSSA and members of the Department of Communication also purchased gifts for families in need that they adopted for the season.
