Memorial Day To Be Celebrated in Long Branch

City to offer several events on Memorial Day starting at 9 a.m.

Those looking for a way to celebrate Memorial Day needn't look any further than the events going on in Long Branch.

The first event will not actually be held on Memorial Day, but at the War Memorial at Long Branch High School on Friday, May 27 at 10 a.m. The students will hold a ceremony to commemorate the fallen soldiers.

On Monday, May 30, Memorial Day events will begin with a ceremony at Fireman's Field at Woodgate and Overlook Avenues in the Elberon section of Long Branch at 9 a.m.

There will then be a wreath-laying ceremony at West End Beach at 9:45 a.m.

Next, there will be a ceremony at Jerry Morgan Park on Long Branch Avenue at 10 a.m.

The annual Memorial Day services will be held at Long Branch City Hall, 344 Broadway, at 11 a.m.

Three Long Branch School students have been selected as winners for the Municipal Memorial Day Essay contest and will read their essays in front of city hall. Each student will also receive a $100 cash prize.

The following students will read their essays on Memorial Day:

  • Gabriela Perez: Grade 4, Amerigo A. Anastasia School
  • Thomas Flannigan: Grade 8, Long Branch Middle School
  • Wesley Lehman: Grade 11, Long Branch High School 

Following the ceremony at , there will be an open house at VFW Post 2140 at 255 Willow Ave., Long Branch.
