Monmouth Medical Center Presents May Community Health Education Programs

SECRETS FOR SUCCESSFUL AGING
Thursday, May 1 from 11 to11:45 a.m.
Join Shira Goldberg, MD, Geriatrics, Monmouth Medical Center, for an informative presentation discussing the key strategies to help maintain independence and grow old gracefully. This program, for ages 60 and older, will take place at the Howell Senior Center in Howell, located at 251 Preventorium Road.  Registration is required by calling 732-938-4500, ext. 2554.  Free.

STROKE AWARENESS DAY AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER
Friday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
May is National Stroke Awareness month. The best way to protect yourself and loved ones from stroke is to understand personal risk and how to manage it. Stroke is an emergency. The more people who can recognize and respond to stroke warning signs FAST – the better. Learn about prevention and how to act FAST for stroke. Visit The Stroke Center information table outside the SeaBreeze Café at Monmouth Medical Center, ground floor lobby, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. Free.

DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES
Fridays, May 2, 9, 16 &23 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Mondays, May 12, 19, & 26 and June 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025. HEART SAVER CPR/AED PROGRAM
Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Babysitters, parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend this course that provides automated external defibrillator (AED) training to laypersons and also teaches how to recognize a medical emergency, adult, infant and child CPR, first aid for choking victims and the use of barrier devices to reduce the risk of infection. This class will take place at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. HEART SAVER FIRST AID
Saturday, May 3 from 1 to 4 p.m.
This is a credentialed course intended for individuals with a duty to respond to a first aid emergency. The course contains information on how to manage illness and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Note that CPR is not part of this program. Techniques learned from the course can be tailored for both adults and children. The program will take place at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER
Monday, May 5 from 1 to 3:00 p.m.
This is a special program sponsored by the American Cancer Society for women cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Learn to cope with the side effects of treatment and feel comfortable with changes in your appearance by receiving a personal makeover by cosmetology professionals. UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS FOR REHABILITATION
Tuesday, May 6 at 4 p.m.
It can be overwhelming to choose the right level of therapy for yourself or a loved one during a hospitalization for a stroke, fracture or other life-altering event. During this one-hour session, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, will discuss all levels of therapy including home therapy, in-patient acute and sub-acute rehabilitation and out-patient rehab and prepare you to make the best decision on rehabilitation for yourself or a family member. This program will take place at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, 1st floor conference room, located at 2 Centre Plaza in Tinton Falls. KEYPORT COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR
Thursday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Stop by the Monmouth Medical Center table at the Keyport Community Health Fair to receive health information, participate in brain games and receive free health screenings and giveaways.. This program will be held at the Keyport Senior Center located at 100 Second Avenue in Keyport. Free.

FREE GLUCOSE SCREENINGS
Thursdays, May 8 & 22 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
A simple finger stick to test blood sugar to determine if glucose level is elevated. The test will be performed by a registered nurse. This program will be held at the Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center in classroom #A001 in the Maysie Stroock Pavilion, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. SCAN HEALTHY AGING FAIR
Wednesday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
Co-sponsored by SCAN and Monmouth County Office on Aging, this event features free screenings, health information, lectures and more. Stop by Monmouth Medical Center’s information tables for free cholesterol screenings, body composition analysis, body mass index and DermaView facial scans to learn about the damaging effects of the sun and the importance of using sunscreen.  This event will take place at Monmouth Mall, located at Routes 35 & 36, Eatontown. Free.

LIVING WELL WITH DIABETES
Wednesday, May 14 at 1 p.m.
Millions of people in the U.S. have diabetes – many of them don’t even know that they have the disease.  Although diabetes is a serious health problem, with proper care, it can be managed. Instructor Autumn Dempsey, RN, CDE will discuss how to recognize the signs and symptoms of diabetes and the important role that diet plays in controlling this disease. SAFE SITTER
Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Presented by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this program teaches 11- to 13-year-olds to be responsible, creative babysitters with special emphasis on how to handle emergencies. LADIES NIGHT OUT: EMPOWERING WOMEN TO LIVE HEALTHY
Tuesday, May 20, Doors open at 5 p.m., Presentations begin at 6 p.m.
This annual event features health information tables, giveaways, door prizes and a panel of Monmouth Medical Center physician experts who will discuss today’s most vital women’s health issues and offer an overview of the latest technological advances.  Light fare and beverages provided. HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Wednesday, May 21 at 1 p.m.
For many adults, the experience of sleep changes as we age. To help get a better night’s sleep, join Sunil Kumar, MBBS, RPSGT, Polysomnographer at The Sleep Disorders Center at Monmouth Medical Center, to learn about age-related changes and how sleep-related disorders can be evaluated.  This program, for ages 50 and older, will take place at SCAN  in the Monmouth Mall located at Routes 35 & 36 in Eatontown. WEIGHT LOSS INSTITUTE OF NEW JERSEY AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER: NEW PATIENT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY LECTURE
Thursday, May 22 from 6 to 7 p.m.
If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you can’t afford to miss this educational lecture which will explain everything you need to know about weight-loss surgery. For those considering a bariatric procedure, this program is presented by Frank Borao, MD and Steven Binenbaum, MD, board-certified, laparoscopic-fellowship-trained surgeons who will offer the most up-to-date information on gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy. CREATING A MANDALA

The word ‘Mandala’ translates to mean Circle or center in the language of Sanskirt. It refers to a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relationship to the infinite and the world that extends both beyond and within. Join Barbara Restuccio, RN, HNBC, HTPA, Monmouth Medical Center Program Instructor, to explore fun and creative ways to represent our wholeness. STRATEGIES FOR HEALTHY AGING

While growing older offers challenges, it also provides rewards. Strategies for healthy aging is a program designed to help us live happier and healthier lives into our later years. This discussion presented by Robin DeNucci, CSW, The Anna Greenwall Geriatric Program, Monmouth Medical Center, will include information on maintaining mental clarity and physical function, fall prevention, financial planning and memory loss.
