Long Branch To Get $1.055 Million In Hurricane Aid
Senators announce second round of grants to fund cleanup
Long Branch will soon get $1,055,475 for debris removal and cleanup resulting from Hurricane Sandy, U.S. Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, both D-N.J., accounced Friday.
The two senators announced the second round of federal funding to help reimburse New Jersey municipalities for cleanup work completed in the wake of Sandy.
This round of funding includes more than $12.9 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funding to reimburse local governments for debris removal in Middletown, Howell, Eatontown, Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Beach Haven.
In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, local governments acted quickly to keep families and communities safe, and this federal funding will help ease the burden of recovery costs for municipalities, said Lautenberg, vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which funds FEMA.
“These federal grants will help municipalities recover, but there is much more work to be done to ensure that our state can rebuild stronger than ever. We will continue working with state and local governments to provide federal resources for cities and towns across New Jersey," he said.
FEMA is reimbursing local governments for the following debris removal costs:
- $4,062,255 for Middletown
- $1,312,500 for Howell
- $1,506,000 for Eatontown
- $1,399,012 for Asbury Park
- $3,643,769 for Beach Haven
- $1,055,475 for Long Branch
FEMA awards these grants on a rolling basis after receiving applications from the state, which coordinates the process with local governments. These grants are the second of more rounds of municipal FEMA reimbursements to be announced.

I live in Long Branch and I have been all over Middletown since Sandy. I may not be seeing it but I am seeing piles of refuse all over Long Branch and really not much in Middletown. Am I wrong in questioning the disparity of aid?

Skippy, you are wrong. Long Branch spent the first 2 weeks cleaning Pier Village and knocking down the boardwalk so they could get cash to pay to rebuild it.

Well thanks for the reply BigW. I live near Pier Village but I hadn't noticed them knocking down the boardwalk, but I had seen pictures of it destroyed by the storm right after. Really from my own observations I feel like Long Branch has much more refuse due to the storm than I have noticed in Mtown.

Skippy, why shouldn't Middletown be included? And you really have been "ALL OVER" Middletown as you say? Just wondering, because fyi Middletown includes: Belford, Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft, Locust, Navesink, New Monmouth, North Middletown, Port Monmouth, and yes even Sandy Hook. That's quite a lot of mileage to cover! And while the storm affected everyone, those areas east of Rte 36 got hit the hardest, even though it wasn't publicized as much as other towns like say Seaside Heights or Union Beach.
